ABOUT OUR LEATHERS
|
WHAT MAKES GOOD LEATHERS
Firstly the hide itself. There are many leathers available - goat, lamb, buffalo, kangaroo, cowhide, the list goes on.
We believe only two of these, buffalo and cowhide, have the strength and thickness to be suitable for good motorcycle
leathers. Kangaroo is sometimes used in racing suits where they are used possibly once and then replaced. Although it is naturally soft it tends to harden when exposed to the weather. We use lamb and goat in our fashion gear but for motorcycle
leathers - no way. Buffalo is strong but is usually used where articles have to made to a price. It is stiffer and
not as flexible as cowhide.
For all our motorcycle leathers we use cowhide. A lot of manufacturers use light leather hides as they can produce an
article that looks good and because of it's thinness is reasonably soft. We believe, from our extensive racing
background, that these are not strong enough. Of course the thicker the hide is, the stiffer it
is, which inturn restricts the movement of the rider. There are several ways that we can make the cowhide softer.
The method we normally use is to chrome-tan the hide, vegetable-tan and then
drum dye with colour agents and specials oils. The whole process is expensive but we finish up with a strong cowhide
that is softer and pliable. Our "Premium" range uses cowhide that is graded A+ (most manufacturers use A or B
or as mentioned earlier buffalo). We also use Keprotec Kevlar in a lot in places where extra flexibility is required.
Our "Value" range still uses quality cowhides that are strong but initially are not so soft as the hides we use
in the "Premium" range. All cowhides will soften with age and use. Buffalo hides will normally remain quite stiff.
In 2008 we introduced a waterproofed cowhide range. The garment was manufactured using split cowhide leather laminated with Rexion for waterproofing. However this has not proved to be as successful as we would have liked and we have stopped the sale of these garments. We are discussing the problem with the manufacturer.
Manufacture
Again through our experience in racing we know that a lot of leathers fail by the stitching
coming apart. We use a special strong thread on all our motorcycle garments that will hold together under the most
testing conditions. We know where padding is needed and on our leathers we have placed
extra padding in such areas as the kidneys, shoulders, elbows, butt, hips and knees. All our "Waterproof" and "Premium" quality leathers
have removable body armour (back, elbows, shoulders, knees and hips - Brando & Cherokee excluded. We always use only genuine YKK zips throughout
to ensure that this is not a weak point. With our "Waterproof" & "Premium" range we provide a zip to connect leather pants. In the "Premium" we also provide a
washable zip-out winter inner liner.
